HLC Annual Assembly 2023

Our annual assembly will be held at the Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Public Library on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 10 a.m. Awards will be presented for students and tutors of the year. We will release our annual publication, Visions, and have readings from the latest edition.

We are also pleased to have Dr. Liana Fox who will be our outstanding guest speaker:

Dr. Liana Fox

Dr. Fox is the fourth generation of her Cuban and Sicilian ancestors to live in Tampa. She began attending the University of South Florida in 1964, and eventually received her Ph.D. from USF in 1998. She taught mathematics for almost 40 years at HCC and USF.  She pioneered online mathematics courses for HCC and taught a live call-in show for the Tampa Bay Education Channel. In 2019 she was granted Professor Emeritus status in the first cohort ever awarded by Hillsborough Community College.

Dr. Fox is currently a Trustee and Chair of the Education Committee for the Tampa Bay History Center. She is a past Board Chair for Champions for Children. She remains active at USF, serving on the Dean’s Advisory Council for both the Colleges of Education and the College of Arts & Sciences. She is active in USF’s Women in Leadership and Philanthropy (WLP) and a past member of the USF Latin Community Advisory Committee. Dr. Fox is a graduate of Leadership Florida, was National President of the USF Alumni Association, President of the League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County and President of FUSA, the faculty union at HCC.

Dr. Fox has served on the boards of United Way Suncoast and United Way of Florida, acting as advisor for UWay of Florida’s ALICE report. In 2018 she was honored to receive Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Girl Scouts of W. Central Florida and USF’s WLP. In 2020, she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the League of Women Voters and received the Hometown Hero Award from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Her advocacy efforts and board service have focused on three areas which have significantly impacted her life: increased access to high quality and affordable post-secondary education, active participation of citizens in government, and issues of race, tolerance and social justice.

Liana has been married for 54 years to Tampa native, Robert A. Fox. They have two sons and three grandchildren.
