In its
English for Speakers of Other Languages Program (ESL), the
tutors teach speakers of other languages, over the age of 18, to
read, write and communicate in English. ESL students are local residents
with various nationalities and limited communication skills. As
with the BASIC program, students are taught through a variety of
materials, including the Life Prints series of manuals published
by New Readers Press.
This
method is taught to our ESL tutor through 12 hours of training,
one (1) eight hour class and one (1) four hour class, held on consecutive
Saturdays. Because ESL students come from Central and South America,
Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Pacific Rim, ESL tutors are
trained to understand the various cultures in an effort to communicate
with the students. Once the student graduates from the ESL program,
they are encouraged to enter the BASIC program. ESL classes are
generally taught in groups, but are also done one-on-one. As in
the BASIC program, tutors and students are matched according to
locations and schedules.
ESL
Tutor Training
Sessions are held on two consecutive Saturdays at the John F. Germany
Public Library. The first
Saturday class runs from 9:15 am to 1:00 pm. The second Saturday class
begins at 9:15 am and ends at 4:45. Click to see
schedule.
The
Council also is seeking new trainers.
