Get Involved

Our volunteers are dedicated individuals who receive training, materials and ongoing support from the Hillsborough Literacy Council.

Most of our volunteers have no prior teaching or tutoring experience!  They are members of our community who are willing to commit their time and skills toward helping their fellow residents achieve functional literacy and learn English.

YOU CAN HELP

Volunteer

Hillsborough Literacy Council trains volunteers to help adults learn to read or to speak English.

  • Adult Basic Literacy:
Tutor an adult in basic reading and writing skills up to a 5th grade level.
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL):
Tutor adults in conversational English skills in small groups of 2-3 learners.
  • Conversation Corners:
Casual small-group programs led by a volunteer English speaker or tutor for adults who are able to speak some English and would like extra opportunities to speak and practice English.

HLC provides tutors with the materials needed and all volunteers attend virtual training sessions before being matched with an adult on our waiting list.

Interested adults may visit our Become a Tutor and Volunteer pages for more details.
