Who can become a Conversation Corner volunteer?

Any adult (18 years or older) with a high school diploma or GED certificate and transportation can become a tutor.

What do Conversation Corner volunteers do?

The Hillsborough Literacy Council organizes English practice groups called “Conversation Corner” to help adult students who are new to English practice their language skills.  These groups are offered at select branches a few times each year.

Each group has one volunteer organizer who is in charge and a few volunteers who lead discussions with small groups of English language learners.  Conversation Corner volunteers do not need to speak their students’ native languages.

Conversation Corner volunteers meet with their groups once a week.  We ask volunteers to commit to one semester (up to 10 weeks) to insure continuity in the groups.

What do Conversation Corner organizers do?

Conversation Corner organizers work with the Hillsborough Literacy Council staff to coordinate group schedules and take on the additional responsibility of being “in charge” of the students and volunteers.
